Lifting The Lid

De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, January 2002

I worked in collaboration with artist Hannah Barker. The theme was Identity to accompany the AKA exhibition about how artists disguise themselves and take on new identities. The exhibition included artists Gavin Turk, Maud Sulter and Paul Smith. We devised work sheets introducing people to the exhibition through questions about the art and drawing exercises. This was followed by an opportunity for people to create their own character using props and costumes. Then they posed in front of the digital camera and selected an appropriate background for their characters to be cut and pasted onto in Photoshop. All ages got involved from little four year olds to parents!

I have also led printmaking workshops for families at the De La Warr Pavilion. These also included liasing with the educational officer and collaborating with a second lead artist, Louise Burgess in devising work sheets, which again introduced school groups and families to the exhibitions encouraging them to take a more detailed look at the work. People were shown how to make brightly coloured monoprints with Styrofoam boards, an assortment of materials for stencils and textures and a range of water-based inks.
